The Marriage of Figaro (Italian: Le nozze di Figaro, pronounced [le ˈnɔttse di ˈfiːɡaro] ), K. 492, is a commedia per musica (opera buffa) in four acts composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The opera's libretto is based on the 1784 stage comedy by Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro ("The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro"). It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married, foiling the efforts of their philandering employer Count Almaviva to seduce Susanna and teaching him a lesson in fidelity. Considered one of the greatest operas ever written, it is a cornerstone of the repertoire and appears consistently among the top ten in the Operabase list of most frequently performed operas. In 2017, BBC News Magazine asked 172 opera singers to vote for the best operas ever written. The Marriage of Figaro came in first out of the 20 operas featured, with the magazine describing it as being "one of the supreme masterpieces of operatic comedy, whose rich sense of humanity shines out of Mozart's miraculous score".

The Kleine Freimaurer-Kantate, K. 623 (Little Masonic Cantata), also called "Laut verkünde unsre Freude" ("Proclaim our Joy Aloud") after its opening words, is a cantata by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Finished in 1791 shortly before his death, the work is the final one completed by Mozart. A Mozart biographer claimed the Cantata may have been well-received in its premiere, making Mozart happy. However, the premiere may have contributed to the illness that led to Mozart's death. Despite not being the most popular of his works, multiple versions and recordings of the Cantata have been published. The Cantata has 6 movements, and they only contain male voices accompanied by an orchestra. It was inspired by Mozart's Freemasonry, compared to Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, and debated over who wrote the lyrics. The opera section describes optimism, both from its main characters and for the broader time period of Mozart. However, some analysts suggest that the world in the following centuries did not become as bright as Mozart had hoped.

Ave verum corpus ("Hail, True Body"), K. 618, is a motet in D major composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791. It is a setting of the Latin hymn of the same name. Mozart wrote it for Anton Stoll, a friend who was the church musician of St. Stephan in Baden bei Wien. The motet was composed for the feast of Corpus Christi; the autograph is dated 17 June 1791. It is scored for SATB choir, string instruments and organ.

The cantata was commissioned by the Wiener Tonkünstler-Societät, and first performed on 13 March 1785 in the Vienna Burgtheater. Though Mozart touched on various minor keys in his symphonies, G minor is the only minor key he used as a main key for his numbered symphonies. He was born in Dessau, the only surviving child of Leopold III, Prince and later Duke of Anhalt-Dessau, by his wife Louise, daughter of Frederick Henry, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt. His only sibling, a sister born on 11 February 1768, was either stillborn or died shortly after her birth.

Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots (complete title in historical spelling: Die Schuldigkeit Des ersten und fürnehmsten Gebotes; The Obligation of the First and Foremost Commandment), K. 35, is a sacred musical play (geistliches Singspiel) composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1767 when he was 11 years old. It is Mozart's first opera or, more specifically, sacred drama, as is suggested by the name. The libretto is now attributed to Ignatz Anton von Weiser, although Johann Adam Wieland or Jakob Anton Marianus Wimmer had been suggested earlier. (The title page of the libretto ascribes it only to "J.A.W.".) Only the first part of the opera was composed by Mozart; the second and third parts were contributed by Michael Haydn and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser respectively. However, these other two parts have not survived. Part 1 of the opera was first performed on 12 March 1767, in the Knights' Hall of the Palace of the Archbishop, the Salzburg Residenz. Part 2 was performed on 19 March, and part 3 on 26 March.

Franz Schubert (31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828), a Viennese composer of the late Classical to early Romantic eras, left a very extensive body of work notwithstanding his short life. He wrote over 1,500 items, or, when collections, cycles and variants are grouped, some thousand compositions. The largest group are his over six hundred Lieder for solo voice and piano. He composed nearly as many piano pieces, and further some 150 part songs, some 40 liturgical compositions (including several masses) and around 20 stage works like operas and incidental music. His orchestral output includes thirteen symphonies (seven completed) and several overtures. Schubert's chamber music includes over 20 string quartets, and several quintets, trios and duos. Otto Erich Deutsch compiled the first comprehensive catalogue of Schubert's works and published it in 1951 as Schubert: Thematic Catalogue of all his Works in Chronological Order. A revised edition appeared in German in 1978. Later editions of the catalogue contained minor updates. Publication of Schubert's compositions started during his lifetime, by opus number. After the composer's death, posthumous opus numbers continued to be assigned to new publications of his work until 1867 (Op. post. 173). Meanwhile, publications without opus number had also started. For instance, from shortly after the composer's death, the many songs in Diabelli's fifty Nachlaß-Lieferung (installment from the heritage) editions. There are two attempts to publish everything Schubert has composed in a single edition: From 1884 to 1897 Breitkopf & Härtel published twenty-two series of Franz Schubert's Werke: Kritisch durchgesehene Gesammtausgabe, known as the Alte Gesamt-Ausgabe (AGA, the former complete edition). From 1965 Dover Publications started to reprint this edition, and later it was made available at the IMSLP website. The Neue Schubert-Ausgabe (NSA), also known as the New Schubert Edition (NSE), is published by Bärenreiter (Kassel). Plans for this edition began as early as 1963, with the foundation of the International Schubert Society, headquartered at the University of Tübingen, Germany. 81 of the edition's projected 101 volumes were published by early May 2015, and it is scheduled to conclude in 2027. Grabmusik, K.42

Grabmusik (Grave Music), K. 42/35a, is a 20-minute cantata by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Translated variously into Cantata on Christ's Grave and Music for the Holy Sepulchre, it was composed in Salzburg during Holy Week in 1767. The circumstances of the work's composition are bizarre, as the eleven-year-old Mozart was closeted at the order of Sigismund von Schrattenbach, who doubted the authenticity of the previous works attributed to him, and subsequently required him to write the cantata in the course of a week. The author of the text is unknown, but there have been several assumptions among musicologists, reflecting the attribution of Mozart's previous sacred singspiel Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots.

Great Mass in C minor, K.427

Great Mass in C minor (German: Große Messe in c-Moll), K. 427/417a, is the common name of the musical setting of the mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which is considered one of his greatest works. He composed it in Vienna in 1782 and 1783, aged 26–27, after his marriage, when he moved to Vienna from Salzburg. The large-scale work, a missa solemnis, is scored for two soprano soloists, a tenor and a bass, double chorus and large orchestra. The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a Requiem Mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who had commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna, who had died at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. The autograph manuscript shows the finished and orchestrated movement of the Introit in Mozart's hand, and detailed drafts of the Kyrie, the Sequence (the latter including the first eight bars of the Lacrimosa), and the Offertorium. First Joseph Eybler and then Franz Xaver Süssmayr filled in the rest, composed additional movements, and made a clean copy of the completed parts of the score for delivery to Walsegg, imitating Mozart's musical handwriting but clumsily dating it "1792." It cannot be shown to what extent Süssmayr may have depended on now lost "scraps of paper" for the remainder; he later claimed the Sanctus and Benedictus and the Agnus Dei as his own. Walsegg probably intended to pass the Requiem off as his own composition, as he is known to have done with other works. This plan was frustrated by a public benefit performance for Mozart's widow Constanze. She was responsible for a number of stories surrounding the composition of the work, including the claims that Mozart received the commission from a mysterious messenger who did not reveal the commissioner's identity, and that Mozart came to believe that he was writing the Requiem for his own funeral. In addition to the Süssmayr version, a number of alternative completions have been developed by composers and musicologists in the 20th and 21st centuries. At least 19 conjectural completions have been made, eleven of which date from after 2005.

La Betulia liberata (The Liberation of Bethulia) is a libretto by Pietro Metastasio which was originally commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and set to music by Georg Reutter the Younger in 1734. It was subsequently set by as many as 30 composers, including Niccolò Jommelli (1743), Ignaz Holzbauer (1752), Florian Leopold Gassmann (1772), Joseph Schuster (1787), and most famously Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1771).

Liebes Manndel, wo ist's Bandel, K.441

"Liebes Manndel, wo ist's Bandel?" ("Dearest husband, where's my hatband?"), otherwise known as "Das Bandel" is a terzet (song for three voices) with string accompaniment composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, K. 441, with lyrics in the Viennese dialect. The vocal parts are designated as Constanze (soprano), Mozart (tenor) and Jacquin (bass). The piece is humorous and light-hearted and owes its existence to an incident in which Constanze lost the ribbon for her hat. Gottfried von Jacquin, a friend, arrives and finds it. All three celebrate together. It was long believed to have been written in 1783, however Alan Tyson determined that the autograph is copied on a very rare type of paper that was used by Mozart only in the year 1786. Tyson noted that a number of small-scale pieces not included in Mozart's own catalog of compositions (begun in February 1784) were believed to have been written before it was started, whereas they may simply have been considered too inconsequential for Mozart to record. In a letter from Prague of 15 January 1787, Mozart mentioned a performance of the terzet with some of his friends at the palace in which he was staying. Naturally, it makes more sense to imagine it being performed in Prague as a piece recently composed rather than a piece that was nearly four years old.

Little Masonic Cantata, K.623

The Kleine Freimaurer-Kantate, K. 623 (Little Masonic Cantata), also called "Laut verkünde unsre Freude" ("Proclaim our Joy Aloud") after its opening words, is a cantata by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Finished in 1791 shortly before his death, the work is the final one completed by Mozart. A Mozart biographer claimed the Cantata may have been well-received in its premiere, making Mozart happy. However, the premiere may have contributed to the illness that led to Mozart's death. Despite not being the most popular of his works, multiple versions and recordings of the Cantata have been published. The Cantata has 6 movements, and they only contain male voices accompanied by an orchestra. It was inspired by Mozart's Freemasonry, compared to Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, and debated over who wrote the lyrics. The opera section describes optimism, both from its main characters and for the broader time period of Mozart. However, some analysts suggest that the world in the following centuries did not become as bright as Mozart had hoped.

The Missa in honorem Sanctissimae Trinitatis in C major, K. 167, is a mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in June 1773. It is scored for SATB choir, violin I and II, 2 oboes, 2 clarini (high trumpets), 2 trumpets, timpani and basso continuo. A solemn mass, its name ("in honour of the Most Holy Trinity") and date indicate that it was likely to have been composed for Trinity Sunday, for use in the Holy Trinity Church, Salzburg. The mass is Mozart's only wholly choral mass setting, excluding all solo vocalists. Alfred Einstein contends that this may have been done in order to achieve brevity, following the directive of Archbishop Colloredo. The work consists of six movements. Mass in C major, K.257, "Credo"

The Credo Mass in C major, K. 257, is a mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1776. It is scored for SATB soloists, SATB choir, violin I and II, 2 oboes, 2 clarini (high trumpets), 3 trombones colla parte and basso continuo. The Credo Mass has been classified as either a missa solemnis, a missa brevis or a missa brevis et solemnis – its performance time of approximately 25 minutes makes it difficult to categorise in a definitive manner. Its name derives from the long setting of the Credo, in which the word "Credo" is repeatedly sung in a two-note motif. It thus joins a tradition of so-called "Credo Masses", including Mozart's own Kleine Credo Messe (K. 192) and Beethoven's later Missa solemnis. The first performance was in Salzburg in November 1776. This is one of three masses Mozart composed in November and December 1776, all set in C major, including the Piccolominimesse (K. 258) and the Organ Solo Mass (K. 259). The work consists of six movements. The Missa longa in C major, K. 262/246a, is a mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in May 1776. Other sources claim it was composed in May 1775. It is scored for SATB soloists, SATB choir, violins I and II, 2 oboes, 2 horns in C, 2 clarini (high trumpets) in C, 3 trombones colla parte, timpani and basso continuo. The mass is classed as a missa longa due to its length. However, due to its lack of extended writing for the solo parts, it has also been categorised as a missa brevis. The occasion the mass was composed for remains debatable. It may have been composed at the Archbishop Colloredo's request for a special occasion at the Salzburg Cathedral, or at the directive of a different priest – Colloredo's preference for brief settings makes it unlikely that he would have approved of the missa longa. The Missa solemnis in C major, K. 66, is a mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1769. It is scored for SATB soloists and choir, violins I and II, viola, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 clarini (high trumpets), 2 trumpets and basso continuo. Mozart composed the mass for the ordination of Cajetan Hagenauer, son of Lorenz Hagenauer, the Mozarts' landlord and family friend. Cajetan had entered St Peter's Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, whilst the Mozarts were on their grand tour. When he became a priest in 1769, he took the name Pater Dominicus and celebrated his first solemn high mass; this gives the work its nickname, Dominicusmesse. Leopold Mozart conducted the première on 15 October to a packed church in Salzburg; it is thought that the success of this performance led to Wolfgang's first Italian tour. The Dona nobis is set as a gavotte, "like a vaudeville and has been compared with the specimen of this genre at the end of Die Entführung aus dem Serail." The first known performance took place on December 21, 1777, with castrato Francesco Ceccarelli among the soloists singled out for praise for his performance, but David Schildkret has argued that it was more likely composed as early as 1772. Elsewhere church musicians were offended, such as those at Wasserburg am Inn, who found Mozart's setting "an open mockery of the holy text."

Missa brevis in C major, K.220, "Spatzen"

The Sparrow Mass (German: Spatzenmesse) is a mass in C major K. 220/196b, Mass No. 9, Missa brevis No. 5, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775 or 1776 in Salzburg. The mass is sometimes termed a missa brevis et solemnis, because it is short in a simple structure as a missa brevis, but festively scored like a missa solemnis with brass and timpani in addition to four soloists, strings and organ. It was possibly first performed on 7 April 1776 in a mass for Easter at the Salzburg Cathedral. The nickname is derived from violin figures in the Hosanna which resemble bird chirping.

The Missa brevis in D major, K. 194/186h, is a mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and completed on 8 August 1774. It is scored for SATB soloists, SATB choir, violin I and II, 3 trombones colla parte, and basso continuo. This missa brevis is thought to have been composed for ordinary liturgical use in the Salzburg Cathedral, under the directive of Archbishop Colloredo. Mozart tried to satisfy Colloredo's demands for brevity and concision in the composition of this mass – none of the movements have an orchestral prelude, the orchestra itself is highly reduced, there is very little fugal writing, and much of the setting is homophonic. The Missa brevis in D minor, K. 65/61a, is a mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (12 years old at the time) and completed on 14 January 1769. The long held belief, based on Sigismund Keller's assertion in 1873, that this mass was first performed on 5 February 1769, the pre-Lenten Sunday of Quinquagesima, in the University of Salzburg's Kollegienkirche to open a forty-hour vigil, has later been shown as untenable. As a Lenten mass, the Gloria could not have been performed. This is Mozart's shortest setting of the Order of Mass, and his only missa brevis set in a minor key. It is scored for SATB soloists, SATB choir, 2 trumpets (which Mozart added later), 3 trombones, 2 violins, organ. AMA I/1 No. 6, NMA I:1/1/ii The Credo of this mass features the "Do-Re-Fa-Mi" motif from the hymn Lucis creator, which Mozart later used as the main theme to the final of his Jupiter Symphony. The Magic Flute (German: Die Zauberflöte, pronounced [diː ˈtsaʊbɐˌfløːtə] ), K. 620, is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. It is a Singspiel, a popular form that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work premiered on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder's theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before Mozart's death. It was Mozart's last opera. It was an outstanding success from its first performances, and remains a staple of the opera repertory. In the opera, the Queen of the Night persuades Prince Tamino to rescue her daughter Pamina from captivity under the high priest Sarastro; instead, he learns the high ideals of Sarastro's community and seeks to join it. Separately, then together, Tamino and Pamina undergo severe trials of initiation, which end in triumph, with the Queen and her cohorts vanquished. The earthy Papageno, who accompanies Tamino on his quest, fails the trials completely but is rewarded anyway with the hand of his ideal female companion Papagena.

The Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna ("philharmonic academy of Bologna"; sometimes known in English as the Bologna Academy of Music) is a music education institution in Bologna, Italy. The Accademia de' Filarmonici was founded as an association of musicians in Bologna in 1666 by Vincenzo Maria Carrati. Saint Anthony of Padua was chosen as the patron saint, and an organ with the motto Unitate melos as the emblem. Through the influence of Pietro Ottoboni, the statute of the academy was approved by Clement XI in 1716. In 1749 the Benedict XIV decreed that the Accademia could award the title of Maestro di cappella. Among the early members of the academy were Giovanni Paolo Colonna (one of the founders of 1666), Carlo Donato Cossoni, Arcangelo Corelli (1670), Giacomo Antonio Perti (1688), Giuseppe Maria Jacchini (1688), Giuseppe Maria Orlandini, Antonio Maria Bernacchi (1722), Giovanni Carestini (1726) and the celebrated castrato singer Carlo Farinelli (1730). Requiem in D minor, K.626

The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a Requiem Mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who had commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna, who had died at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. The autograph manuscript shows the finished and orchestrated movement of the Introit in Mozart's hand, and detailed drafts of the Kyrie, the Sequence (the latter including the first eight bars of the Lacrimosa), and the Offertorium. First Joseph Eybler and then Franz Xaver Süssmayr filled in the rest, composed additional movements, and made a clean copy of the completed parts of the score for delivery to Walsegg, imitating Mozart's musical handwriting but clumsily dating it "1792." It cannot be shown to what extent Süssmayr may have depended on now lost "scraps of paper" for the remainder; he later claimed the Sanctus and Benedictus and the Agnus Dei as his own. Walsegg probably intended to pass the Requiem off as his own composition, as he is known to have done with other works. This plan was frustrated by a public benefit performance for Mozart's widow Constanze. She was responsible for a number of stories surrounding the composition of the work, including the claims that Mozart received the commission from a mysterious messenger who did not reveal the commissioner's identity, and that Mozart came to believe that he was writing the Requiem for his own funeral. In addition to the Süssmayr version, a number of alternative completions have been developed by composers and musicologists in the 20th and 21st centuries. At least 19 conjectural completions have been made, eleven of which date from after 2005.

Edward Holmes (1797 – 28 August 1859) was an English musicologist, music critic, pianist, composer and arranger and music educator. Born just outside London, Holmes was a pupil of Vincent Novello. He spent his early career earning a living as a piano teacher. In 1828 he visited Germany, in Salzburg delivering a collection of funds from English music lovers to Constanze, widow of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and upon returning to England published his first book, A Ramble among the Musicians of Germany (1828; 3rd ed., 1838). Impressed with his skills as a writer on music, the owner of The Atlas, Robert Bell hired him as a music critic where he remained for many years. Upon the 1836 shooting death of his brother-in-law, noted illustrator Robert Seymour, following a dispute between Seymour and Charles Dickens over The Pickwick Papers, Holmes took in Seymour's widow Jane and their two children. Also a noted church organist, Holmes composed and published several popular songs including "My Jenny". In 1849 he immigrated alone to the United States where he spent the last ten years of his life working as an editor and music critic. His widow Louisa, who only married him in 1857, was the sister of his late friend, English musicologist Egerton Webbe. Holmes also regularly contributed articles to several music journals during his career, including The Musical Times. His other published works include an arrangement of Mozart's Te Deum, K. 141 in 1844, the biography The Life of Mozart (Chapman and Hall, London, 1845), based on notes and letters of Mozart provided to him by the composer's widow, Life of Purcell for Novello's Sacred Music, and Analytical and Thematic Index of Mozart's Piano-works (1852).

The longest and last symphony that he composed, it is regarded by many critics as among the greatest symphonies in classical music. The work is nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony, probably coined by the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. The autograph manuscript of the symphony is preserved in the Berlin State Library.

Vesperae solennes de confessore (Solemn Vespers for a Confessor), K. 339, is a sacred choral composition written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1780. It is scored for SATB choir and soloists, violin I, violin II, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones colla parte, 2 timpani, and basso continuo (violoncello, double bass, and organ, with optional bassoon obbligato). The composition was written for liturgical use in the Salzburg Cathedral. The title "de confessore" was not Mozart's own, having been added to his manuscript later. It suggests the work was intended for vespers held on a specific day on the liturgical calendar of saints ("confessors"); however, the saint in question has not been conclusively established, and may not have existed. This was Mozart's final choral work composed for the cathedral. Structurally, it is very similar to K. 321 Vesperae solennes de Dominica, composed in 1779. The composition is divided into 6 movements; as in Dominica, a setting of the Minor Doxology (Gloria Patri) concludes all movements, each recapitulating the opening themes. The first three psalms are scored in a bold, exuberant manner, contrasting with the strict, stile antico counterpoint of the a cappella fourth psalm, and the tranquility of the fifth movement. The Magnificat sees a return to the style of the opening settings. Voi avete un cor fedele, K.217

"Voi avete un cor fedele", K. 217, is a concert aria by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for solo soprano and orchestra, composed in Salzburg, dated 26 October 1775. Written around the time of the composition of Mozart's five violin concertos. In this aria, the character Dorina contemplates a new romantic partner. A travelling Italian opera company visited Salzburg, and asked Mozart to write an insertion aria for an opera buffa being performed based on a play by the dramatist Carlo Goldoni titled Le Nozze di Dorina. The scholar Stanley Sadie noted that it is not clear whether the opera in question was Le nozze  (1755) by the Italian composer Baldassare Galuppi to a libretto by Carlo Goldoni or Gioacchino Cocchi's Le Nozze di Dorina (1762) to the same libretto. The aria "is substantial, with ironic overtones, set in alternating slow and fast sections, shows a remarkable advance in comic aptitude in its gestures and its timing as compared with anything in La finta giardiniera", which Mozart had completed few months earlier. Julian Rushton, however, disagrees with Sadie's glowing assessment, wondering where the aria's "giddy coloratura" fits into the comic scheme of the opera. The aria was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1882. It remains a popular concert piece, often performed and recorded.
