Music for the Requiem Mass is any music that accompanies the Requiem, or Mass for the Dead, in the Catholic Church. This church service has inspired hundreds of compositions, including settings by Victoria, Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi, Fauré, Dvořák, Duruflé and Britten. For centuries settings of the Mass for the Dead were to be chanted in liturgical service monophonically. Later the settings became polyphonic, Victoria's famous 1605 a cappella work being an example. By Mozart's time (1791) it was standard to embed the dramatic and long Dies irae (Day of Wrath) sequence, and to score with orchestra. Eventually many settings of the Requiem, not least Verdi's (1874), were essentially concert pieces unsuitable for church service.

The St Luke Passion (full title: Passio et mors Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam, or the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to St Luke) is a work for chorus and orchestra written in 1966 by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. He composed the work to commemorate a millennium of Polish Christianity following the baptism and conversion of Polish duke Mieszko I in 966 AD. Penderecki's setting is one of several musical settings of the Passion story and contains text from the Gospel of Luke as well as other sources such as the Stabat Mater. Despite the Passion's almost total atonality and use of avant-garde musical techniques, the musical public appreciated the work's stark power and direct emotional impact and the piece was performed several more times soon after its premiere on 30 March 1966.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat, BWV 243, is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. It is scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass), and a Baroque orchestra including trumpets and timpani. It is the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by Bach. In 1723, after taking up his post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach set the text of the Magnificat in a twelve movement composition in the key of E-flat major. For a performance at Christmas he inserted four hymns (laudes) related to that feast. This version, including the Christmas interpolations, was given the number 243.1 (previously 243a) in the catalogue of Bach's works. Likely for the feast of Visitation of 1733, or another feast in or around that year, Bach produced a new version of his Latin Magnificat, without the Christmas hymns: instrumentation of some movements was altered or expanded, and the key changed from E-flat major to D major, for performance reasons of the trumpet parts. This version of Bach's Magnificat is known as BWV 243.2 (previously BWV 243). After publication of both versions in the 19th century, the second became the standard for performance. It is one of Bach's most popular vocal works.

Kosmogonia is a composition by Krzysztof Penderecki. Kosmogonia (derived from cosmos) was commissioned by and in celebration of the United Nations twenty-fifth anniversary. It was then performed (on October 24, 1970) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with Zubin Mehta, the choir of Rutgers University and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Penderecki composed the work in his then avant-garde style. The work is written for an extensive line-up, both in choir and in orchestra: soloists: soprano, tenor and bass mixed choir: sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones 4 flutes, of which 2 also piccolo, 4 oboes, 3 clarinets, 1 bass clarinets, 3 bassoons, 1 contra bassoon, 2 alto saxophones, 1 baritone saxophone 6 horns, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 tubas 4 male / female percussion, bass guitar, harp, celesta, harmonium, piano, organ 24 violins, 10 violas, 10 cellos and 8 double bass The work was put on LP soon after the premiere by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra with choir conducted by Andrzej Markowski. The next recording of this piece was released in a continuous retrospective by the composer in 2012.
